Jazz Scene Vibrant in Bay State


(Boston) -- MassJazz has issued its 2012 schedule of jazz and blues festivals and outdoor concerts taking place
in Massachusetts this summer and fall.

Among the new festivals starting up this year: New Bedford Jazz Fest (May 18), Rockport Jazz Fest (August 15-19); Berkshires Gateway Jazz Weekend in Lee (September 14-16); and the Holyoke Latin Jazz Festival (October 13).

MassJazz was launched in 2009 with the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism to promote the year-round vibrant jazz scene across the Commonwealth.

New Bedford JazzFest

Performers include Gerry Gibbs and the Electric Thrasher Orchestra, featuring Gerry Gibbs, Dave Liebman and Nicholas Payton, playing the music of Miles Davis. Also, Southcoast Jazz Orchestra, a 15 piece band, performs.

Paulie’s NOLA Jazz & Blues Festival
Village of Piedmont
Performers include Henri Smith New Orleans Friends & Flavours featuring Charles Neville & Amadee Castenell. Also, Tab Benoit, Eric Lindell Band, Bonerama, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Honey Island Swamp Band, Jumpin Johnny Sansone, Sonny Landreth, and Billy Iuso and more.

Green River Festival
Greenfield Community College
Hot Air balloons, local food and great bands mark this annual festival in western Massachusetts each summer.  Among the performers in 2012: the Rebirth Brass Band, Pokey Lafarge and the South City Three, and the Lake Street Dive, featuring jazz vocalist Rachel Price.

Featuring Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Walter Beasley; vocalist Mikelyn Roderick, and more.

August 3-5
Newport Jazz Festival
Newport, RI
Headliners include Pat Metheney, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell, Dianne Reeves, Maria Schneider, Kurt Ellling, Joe Lovano, Jason Moran and many others. Percussionist Dafnis Prieto has been commissioned to compose a new piece for his sextet to debut at the 2012 Festival.

Martha’s Vineyard Jazz Festival

Featured artists include Sharon Clark, Paul Carr, Chris Grasso, Alex Brown, Joe McCarthy and Zach Brown performing at Provincetown Town Hall on August 11.  Then on August 13, Bruce Abbott, Steve Ahern, Fred Boyle, Ron Ormsby, Tedi March, Debra Mann, Alan Clinger and Bart Weisman perform at the Cotuit Center for the Arts.
