RANDOLPH JAZZ BAND PLAYS JAPAN

A group of high school jazz musicians from Massachusetts fulfilled a dream this spring by performing in Japan, according to Boston Globe reporter Robert Knox.

Nine members of the Boston Higashi School jazz band, directed by Kaname Ueno, performed at a festival in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, on May 28.

The Higashi School, which educates students with autism, is located in Randolph. It emphasizes “physical activity, emotional stability and intellectual growth and direction,” says Principal Deb Donovan, who adds, “We believe music helps enhance children’s creativity.”

The jazz band – which has performed at Ryles Jazz Club in Cambridge – held a fund this spring featuring Tiger Okoshi, professor at Berklee College of Music and a supporter of the program.
